Barnala, October 2
To keep the city clean and plastic-free, Barnala Deputy Commissioner TPS Phoolka and SSP Harjeet Singh on Wednesday led a cleaning drive and urged the residents to keep their surroundings clean.
“All senior officers, along with 5,000 residents, carried out a cleanliness drive in various parts of the district. Residents came out in large numbers to support the campaign. We are hopeful of making Barnala a plastic-free district,” said the DC.
The administration has also roped in special help groups (SHGs) of rural women and got around 1,000 special bags prepared and distributed among the public on Wednesday. The DC said the income of SHGs would increase in the coming days as more bags would be prepared.
Residents said though it was a good initiative, the administration usually forgets after launching such campaigns and later they also lose interest. They demanded consistent monitoring of such campaigns to prevent further damage to the environment.
“Everyone is aware of the ill-effects of the use of plastic and everyone is ready to help the administration get rid of plastic. But the administration must ensure that its campaign does not lose steam after some time. It should continue for a long time,” said Jagtar Singh, a Barnala resident.
SSP Harjeet Singh said he had directed all policemen of the district to contribute to the special campaign against plastic. He said there was an urgent need to spread awareness about the issue.
“If we want to make the district plastic-free, everyone must contribute towards it. We have been trying to convince area residents against the use of plastic,” said the SSP.
