Gulmarg, October 18

The alumni of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) from Kashmir, called Kashmiri Aligs, have urged the university authorities to drop sedition charges against two Valley students.

While expressing solidarity with the Kashmiri students of AMU, the alumni, however, urged them to focus on studies and protect the interests of the university.

The appeal was issued by over 150 Kashmiri alumni of AMU from Gulmarg where they had gathered to celebrate the birth anniversary of AMU founder Sir Syed Ahmad Khan.

The recent developments at the university were the focus of the discussions at the gathering and the organisers of this year’s Sir Syed Day issued a solidarity message for nearly 1,500 Kashmiri students pursuing education at AMU.

“Neither we are an elected body nor we have any mandate but as seniors and old boys of AMU, we urge the authorities concerned to drop the sedition charges against the students. At the same time, we urge the Kashmiri students enrolled at AMU to focus on their education,” a message by the organising committee said.

On Tuesday, the AMU authorities revoked the suspension of research scholars Wasim Ayub Malik and Abdul Hasib Mir saying “no credible evidence” of their participation in any “unlawful assembly” on the university campus was found by a three-member enquiry committee”. However, the FIR for sedition has not been withdrawn yet.
