Karnal records 61.8 pc turnout

A total of 61.8 per cent voters exercised their franchise in Karnal on Sunday. It was 11.7 per cent lower than the last civic body elections, which recorded 73.5 per cent turnout.

Polling was held amid tight security and no toward incident was reported except a few skirmishes between supporters of rival candidates in four wards.

An EVM developed a technical glitch at a booth around 1 pm, delaying polling by around an hour. Polling began on a dull note, but picked up after 12 noon.

Aditya Dahiya, Deputy Commissioner-cum-district election officer, and Surinder Singh Bhoria, Superintendent of Police, inspected the polling booths.

65 pc in Yamunanagar

A turnout of 65.2 per cent was recorded in Yamunanagar on Sunday. Deputy Commissioner-cum-district election officer Girish Arora said the election remained peaceful as no untoward incident was reported.

“A snag developed in the ballot units of only six or seven EVMs, which was rectified within minutes,” he said. The EVMs were kept in the strong room at Saraswati School in Jagadhri under tight security.

Twelve candidates were in the fray for the post of mayor and 126 candidates were contesting the elections for post of councillor.

62 pc in Panipat

Around 62 per cent voters exercised their franchise in 26 wards of Panipat on Sunday. The polling passed off peacefully. A total of 138 candidates were contesting elections of councillor and five of mayor. The total number of voters was 3,28,331, of whom 1,50,211 were women.

Two machines — a ballot unit and a control unit — had to be changed due to a technical snag, said ADC-cum-returning officer Sujan Singh Yadav. Voters faced problems as the number of wards had been increased from 24 to 26 after delimitation. Voters had to hunt for their booths.

Amit Bhatia of Model Town said he was from ward 20, but it took him more than an hour to find his booth. A large number of voters faced the same problem, which affected polling percentage, he added.

62.7% votes polled in Hisar

The fate of 22 mayoral candidates and 108 MC member nominees was sealed in EVM. As much as 62.7 per cent of the electorate exercise its franchise in the MC poll.

Polling was reportedly 4.5 per cent less this time as compared to the previous MC poll in 2013 when about 67 per cent voting was recorded.

Voting remained largely peaceful except for stray incidents of snag in the EVMs and a row over impersonation at a booth in Urban Estate in the town.

62.4% in Rohtak

The polling process in Rohtak remained largely peaceful and 62.4 per cent electors cast their votes for electing their mayor as well as municipal councillors of 22 wards at 257 booths.


25-minute halt in Panipat

Panipat: Supporters of candidates created a ruckus at a booth in ward 22. Polling agents of various candidates accused the presiding officer of supporting an independent candidate. As the information reached supporters, they forced polling to be stopped. DSP Rajesh Phogat and Inspector Amit Sharma pacified the protesters and informed the authorities. Polling was resumed after 25 minutes.
