Jammu, February 12
A complete shutdown was observed in Kargil town on Tuesday amid bone-chilling temperature with thousands of people rallying in support of their demand for setting up rotational headquarters of the newly created Ladakh division in both Kargil and Leh districts.
The protesters were led by religious, political and social leaders, including acting Chief Executive Councillor (CEC) of the Kargil Council. All government offices, including the Council secretariat, deputy commissioner’s office, courts and business establishments remained closed.
It was for the fourth consecutive day that Kargil town saw protests after the state administration, headed by Governor Satya Pal Malik, announced the divisional status to the Ladakh region.
The joint resistance movement, with all political, religious, trade, business and social organisations, have given a call for the closure of government offices from Wednesday till their demand for amendment in the SRO 110 (regarding separate divisional status to Ladakh) is met.
On Tuesday, the protesters marched from Islamic School Chowk towards the DC office with black flags in their hands and staged a demonstration there.
On Monday evening, around 2,000 people assembled in the Larse Masjid area and blocked the national highway. This forced the new Divisional Commissioner of Ladakh Saugat Biswas to return to Leh from the Wakha area.
Representatives of various Kargil-based organiastions have made it clear that nothing less than rotational headquarters would be acceptable to them.
