To mark the martyrdom day of Rani Jhansi, the city based Rani Jhansi Society on Monday held a commemorative programme at DAV College’s hall, which was attended by MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla and former minister Lakshmi Kanta Chawla.

In his address, Aujla said Rani Jhansi had audaciously stood against the tyranny of the invading Britishers. She became a symbol of women power even in the middle age when there were plenty of social taboos prevalent in society.

Chawla said, the supreme sacrifice of Rani Lakshmi Bai would continue to inspire women of future generations. “She sowed the seeds of freedom which eventually culminated with the liberty of the country from the foreign yoke,” she said.

She felt that present generation needs to be educated and informed about the Rani of Jhansi and her tales of valour. She said the youth inspired by such freedom fighters would easily overpower social evils like female foeticide, dowry, eve-teasing, drug addiction to make a strong nation.

Three city women from diverse fields, including, IPS officer Simrat Kaur, ADC Alka Kalia and DAV International School Principal Anjana Gupta were also felicitated.

Play “Khoob Ladi Mardani” directed by Mandeep Ghai was also staged.
