The Sangrur police have taken the custody of Malkit Kaur Sidhu and Surjit Singh Badesha in the Jassi murder case from Royal Canadian Police at the New Delhi airport.
Malkiat Kaur (70), mother of Jassi, and Badesha (75), maternal uncle of Jassi, were handed over to the Sangrur police team led by DSP, Ahmedgarh, Palwinder Singh Cheema, at 6 am today by the Canadian Police, at the Immigration centre at IGI Airport. A team of officials from Canadian Embassy was present there.
The duo were then taken for a medical examination, following which they were produced before a magistrate in Patiala House court. A one-day transit remand was obtained for the duo. Sangrur police said they will now be presented before the Illaqa magistrate at Malerkotla tomorrow, and a police remand for the accused will be taken. A question bank for the duo has been prepared for their questioning during police remand.
Both were extradited from Canada on Wednesday night 19 years after the murder of Jassi, allegedly by contract killers.
Earlier also, Punjab Police had tried to extradite the two in September 2017 but they succeeded in stalling their extradition.
Jassi had married Mithu secretly in March 2000. In June, contract killers had allegedly attacked the couple, killing Jassi while Mithu survived.
Malkiat is the mother of Jassi while Badesha is her maternal uncle.
Following the development, Jassi’s husband Sukhwinder Singh Mithu thanked the Canadian government and hoped justice would prevail.
“I had lost all hope. It has been 19 years. Now, I want to confront Jassi’s mother and ask her if our love was such a big crime. A false case was registered against me and I spent three years in jail in pursuit of justice,” Mithu said.
