Jail inmates’ products a hit at Agro-Tech

Furniture made by inmates of Burail Jail, including variety of wooden chairs, baby chairs, cabinets, insignia, candles and food products were displayed at the CII Agro Tech fair at the Parade Ground in Sector 17.

Sources said the jail staff managed to sell items worth Rs 33,000 on Sunday. In October this year, the Burail Jail authorities displayed products made by inmates at the CII fair in Sector 17.

It was after over a decade that the jail authorities made a comeback at the fair with a wide range of products, including candles made by inmates, especially for the festival of lights.

Before this, the jail authorities had showcased their products at the CII fair in 2007.

Experts discuss stubble burning in Kisan Goshthee

The problem of stubble burning and ways to tackle it was the focus of the ‘Kisan Goshthee’ on paddy straw management, held during the ongoing four-day CII Agro Tech India 2018, here today.

Farmers from various districts, experts from the industry and government officials discussed the issue and solutions to the problem of straw management under one roof.

The ‘Kisan Goshthee’ provided a common platform to farmers to bring forth their views and insights into the problem, which has risen to a magnanimous scale.

The discussion was undertaken by a panel of experts that comprised – Baldev Singh, managing director, Amar Agricultural Machinery Group; Harminder S Sidhu, a progressive farmer; Manmohan Kalia, joint director, Agri-engineering, Punjab; Vikram Ahuja, owner, Zamindara Farmsolutions Pvt Ltd, and Arshdeep Singh, from Punjab Agricultural University (PAU).

Talking about subsidies given by the Punjab Government on purchase of machinery to cut straw and manage it, Manmohan Kalia, emphasised working in groups of eight to 10 farmers was beneficial.

“Farmers should use machines like happy seeder, combine with super SMS, ploughers and bailers to manage straw and mix it in fields,” he suggested.

Innovative offers lure farmers

The Innovators’ Pavilion at the CII Agro Tech India 2018 was thronged by farmers on the second day. With multifarious companies, both domestic and international, bringing a variety of technological advancements, farmers seemed much inquisitive about their benefits and solutions. Electrostatic sprayer, artificial intelligence, E-apps, drones, rain gauge, Android App, farm-management products, weather management services, among other things were showcased at the fair.

Sell power and earn money

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Ropar, has put on display many products, one of which is “Smart integrated irrigation and energy management system”. This product helps convert extra power from solar to AC through an inverter. A farmer can save up to 7,560 units of electricity per year and earn a good amount of money if he decides to sell this power through this system.
