Srinagar, January 13

The Srinagar leg of the FC Bayern Cup, an under-16 football tournament, started at Delhi Public School here on Saturday. The tournament will end in February.

More than 100 students from 16 schools of the Valley are participating in the tournament, which is being sponsored by sports giant Adidas and Kashmir’s known football club Real Kashmir.

Vijay Dhar, chairman of the school, said it was for the first time that such a tournament was being held in a school in the Valley in an indoor stadium. “We have an indoor stadium where the event is being held. It will continue despite the bad weather conditions. Students are very excited,” he said.

“Six matches were played on the first day of the tournament. The opening day witnessed an eager crowd of supporters, who braved the cold to watch the event. The football didn’t disappoint either, as the teams put their best foot forward,” said Ehsan Quddusi, the school in charge.

In the first match, Green Valley defeated Kashmir Harvard 3-2.

In the second match, Kashmir Valley thrashed Al Ghazali School 5-0. Burn Hall notched a victory against Legends School by scoring 2 goals against the one scored by the opposite team.

The fourth match between Tyndale Biscoe and Sanctorum School, Sopore, ended in a stalemate with each team scoring a goal. The fifth match between AGM’s City School versus Kashani School ended in favour of the latter.

The tournament was thrown open by Shafaq Afshan, vice-principal of the school. Participants also appreciated the school for organising the tournament.
