Momentary loss of control by drivers dozing off while driving vehicles is among the main reasons for road accidents many of which are fatal.   Use of technology can be helpful in this and working with this mission, two engineering students from the region have come up with an innovative solution — a sleep detector— that can reduce road accidents.

Lakshya Gupta and Jaldeep Giniya, engineering students of UPES, Dehradun,  have developed a sleep detector device that will detect the reducing attention level of a four-wheeler driver and alert him/her before the mishap.

The device uses computer vision technology to detect the attention levels of the driver. It can be used by automobile companies or by individuals as an additional safety feature.

The two had started a company called Umbeo Tech, which aims to solve real-life problems using technologies like Computer Vision, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence etc.

Lakshya Gupta is a student of BTech third year Computer Science, specialising in Internet of Things and Smart Cities, and Jaldeep Giniya, is also a student of BTech third year Applied Petroleum Engineering Specialisation in Gas.

Umbeo Tech was recognised by Start-up India initiative and is in talks with Uttarakhand government for the testing of the device and possibility of its deployment in state government-run buses. —TNS
