Making shocking revelations against Mahila Dakshata Samiti’s Snehalaya of “outsiders” allegedly sexually abusing the inmates, Delhi Pradesh Mahila Congress (DPMC) president Sharmistha Mukherjee today lodged a complaint at the Anand Vihar Police Station and sought immediate and strong action after registration of an FIR.
She also demanded the Delhi government to conduct a social audit of the women shelter homes by a neutral agency to find out the truth. The home is located at East Delhi's Karkardooma.
Mukherjee said that Congress president Rahul Gandhi had asked All India Mahila Congress president Sushmita Dev to find out the condition of the government shelter homes across the country following the horrible tales of woes that emerged from the ones at Muzaffarpur (Bihar) and Deoria (UP), where women and children were sexually abused by outsiders.
She said following Gandhi's suggestion, the DPMC formed a team of volunteers to find out the condition of the government shelter homes in Delhi.
Mukherjee said the volunteers approached seven shelter homes in Delhi requesting if they can distribute sweets and fruits to the inmates and got entry to three of them. She said the conditions at All India Women’s Conference Shelter Home and Prayas were “OK” while things were “terribly wrong” at Snehalaya.
She said, “one of the inmates they spoke incognito at the shelter home disclosed that outsiders frequented the place to do “wrong things” and they were often beaten up and denied food by the shelter home keepers."
