Two unidentified militants were killed after the Army foiled an infiltration bid in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, officials said. The bid was foiled in Keran sector when the Army noticed suspected movement along the Line of Control in the wee hours of Tuesday. “When the militants were challenged in the Balbir area of Keran sector, they opened fire. In the gunfight that followed, two militants have been killed,” defence sources said.

While the exchange of fire has stopped, the counter-infiltration operation is still underway in the area.

The identity and the group affiliation of the militants had not been established as yet. The Army has also recovered arms and ammunition from the encounter site.

Pak militant shot dead

Jammu: The Army on Tuesday shot dead a heavily armed Pakistani militant during an encounter in the Akhnoor sector near the International Border and recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition from his possession.

The militant had infiltrated into the Indian side. He was challenged before he was gunned down in an encounter. The incident occurred around 1.50 pm.

Giving details, Defence PRO, Jammu, Lt Col Devender Anand said the ambush party killed one terrorist and recovered war-like stores which included five pistols, 10 pistol magazines, 60 bullets, one AK assault rifle, two AK rifle magazines with 234 rounds of ammunition, 15 hand grenades and 12 fuses for IEDs. The entire area has been cordoned off and the search operation is still in progress, he said.

“This huge cache has scuttled the nefarious plans of terrorists to derail the peace and harmony in the region and disrupt the forthcoming panchayat elections in the state,” said the Army officer.
