Indian Oil, Punjab & Sind Bank to vie for title in Surjit Hockey tourney

Indian Oil, Mumbai, will cross swords with Punjab & Sind Bank, Delhi, in the finals of India’s highest prize money 36th Indian Oil Servo Surjit Hockey Tournament on Saturday evening at Surjit Hockey Stadium here. Today in first semi-finals, Punjab & Sind Bank Delhi defeated holders Army XI 5-4 through a penalty shootout. At the end of stipulated time both teams were leveled at 1-1. In second semi-finals, Indian Oil beat Punjab Police 4-2 to reserve berth in finals. Today’s chief guest Santokh Singh, MP, announced a grant of Rs 10 lakh for the Surjit Hockey Society. He said the old astroturf of Surjit Hockey Stadium would be changed next year by the state government.

In the first semi-finals, Punjab & Sind Bank played a controlled game. In the 6th minute of the play, the bank got the lead when international Gaganpreet Singh converted the first penalty corner (1-0). After that bank players made some good moves but not able to increase lead. At half time, bank was leading by 1-0. After lemon break in the 31st minute of the play, Army’s Rahul Rathee equalised from the lovely pass of Jitender Rathee (1-1). In 33rd minute, bank earned a penalty stroke but their captain Santa Singh not able to utilise it. At the end of stipulated time both teams were locked at 1-1. The decision of match done through penalty shootout, which goes in favour of Punjab & Sind Bank by 4-3. For bank Gaganpreet Singh, Harmanjit Singh, Jaskaran Singh and Santa Singh scored the goals. For Army Rajant Rajput, Sanjay Toppo and Rahul Rathee scored the goals.

In the second semi-final, Indian Oil and Punjab Police played fast hockey. In the 7th minute Indian Oil took the lead when Gurjinder Singh converted the penalty corner (1-0). In the 15th minute Punjab Police equalised with the field goal from the stick of Olympian Gurvinder Singh Chandi (1-1). In the 17th minute, Indian Oil’s Manpreet Singh netted the ball from right flank and established a lead of (2-1). At half time Indian Oil was leading by 2-1. In the 41st minute of the game, Punjab Police equalised with field goal scored by Pawandeep Singh (2-2). In 53rd minute Indian Oil’s Gurjinder Singh and in 56th minute Roshan Minj scored the goals (4-2).
