Srinagar, January 11

Former Chief Minister and Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti on Friday said India was matching Pakistan’s policies on the issue of granting citizenship on the basis of religion.

The Lok Sabha earlier this week passed the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019, that seeks to accord citizenship to non-Muslims from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Criticising the citizenship Bill, Mehbooba took to Twitter and termed it appalling and disgusting.

“Granting citizenship on the basis of religion is appalling and disgusting in equal measure. We are full of venom when it comes to Pakistan but are matching some of its policies in spirit,” Mehbooba tweeted.

She further wrote: “But even the country that was formed on the basis of a two-nation theory has changed its attitude towards minorities now. Temples have been declared as national heritage and (it has) approved the Hindu Marriage Bill,” she wrote.

Meanwhile, Mehbooba held an interaction with a delegation led by Peoples Democratic Party youth president Waheed Para. During the interaction, she said the youngsters of the state were the hands that would write the future of Jammu and Kashmir.

Dalits, OBCs slam Mehbooba tweet

Jammu: PDP president Mehbooba Mufti’s tweet on the Citizenship Bill has evoked strong reactions from Dalit and the other backward classes (OBCs) as groups of these marginalised sections have taken the former chief minister to the task for denying them fundamental rights in J&K due to their religion. “It is ridiculous that the former Chief Minister is comparing India with Pakistan on the Citizenship Bill when her party has been opposing fundamental rights to Valmikis living in the state since 1957,” said Garu Bhatti,  chairman of the Valmiki Samaj. “The PDP president has no right to dub the Citizenship Bill as communal because the Kashmir-centric parties are opposing citizenship to West Pakistan refugees, living in Jammu since 1947, on the religious line,” said Labha Ram Gandhi, leader of West Pakistan refugees. tns
