Thousands of people from the area swarmed to bid adieu to CRPF Constable Kulwinder Singh (26) at his native village here today. The mortal remains of Kulwinder were brought to the Nurpur Bedi police station at 7.30 am.

Senior CRPF officials, including DIG, Sonepat range, Amar Singh Negi, Commandant Harvinder Singh and Deputy Commandant Gio Rau were accompanying the body. Speaker Rana KP Singh, AAP leader and local MLA Amarjit Singh Sandoa, senior SAD leader and former minister Daljit Singh Cheema, Ropar DC Sumeet Jarangal and Congress district chief Brinder Singh Dhillon were among the dignitaries who reached to pay tributes to the martyr.

Thousands of residents waited on both sides of the road to pay floral tributes to the martyr when his mortal remains were taken to his village from Nurpur Bedi. At his home, his relatives, including his fiancee Amandeep Kaur, were inconsolable. Kulwinder was to get married on November 8. His father Darshan Singh, who lost his only child, said he was proud of his son’s sacrifice. “The only regret I have is that my son could not sacrifice his life while fighting with enemy of the country,” said Darshan Singh, while holding the Tricolour to his chest in which the body of his son was wrapped.

At the cremation ground, a contingent of CRPF jawans fired gun shots in the air and reversed their arms. The markets of Nurpur Bedi remained shut while a large number of shopkeepers in Ropar town also observed bandh till afternoon in protest against the attack on CRPF jawans.

Punjabi panel to help martyrs’ children 

New Delhi: The World Punjabi Organisation on Saturday said children of all martyred CRPF jawans from Punjab would be adopted and all expenses of their education and bringing up would be borne by it. Vikramjit Singh Sahney, president of the World Punjabi Organisation, said, “It was the most horrific and inhuman act on our soldiers. They laid down their lives in the line of duty. We pray for the  departed souls and hope their families get the strength to bear with this irreparable loss.” TNS
