Ambala: A truckload of liquor smuggled from Chandigarh was seized here after the vehicle was intercepted by a Haryana CM flying squad team. While the truck driver, Sandeep of Una in HP, was arrested, the distillery owner and others allegedly involved in the liquor smuggling were booked in a case registered at the Baldev Nagar police station. ASI Hitender Gautam of the CM flying squad said on a tip-off, they intercepted a truck and found 600 boxes of smuggled liquor in it. TNS
Woman held for Rs 20L job fraud
Mohali: A woman has been arrested for a Rs 20-lakh job fraud. The suspect has been identified as Sohnpreet Kaur (27), a native of Mansa village in Punjab putting up in Sector 78 here. In their complaint to the police, Satwinder Singh and Lakhwinder Singh, both residents of Mohali, stated that they met the suspect through a mediator on July 11. She assured them of getting them jobs in the Punjab and Haryana Court for a monetary consideration. Believing her, the victims deposited Rs 20 lakh in her account on July 26. They drew a suspicion when she sought Rs 14 lakh more. They informed the police. A case under Section 420, 467, 468, 471 and 120-B of the IPC was registered at the Mataur police station. She was arrested and produced in a court on Friday, which remanded her to three-day police custody. TNS
Fire breaks out at sweets unit
Zirakpur: A fire broke out at a sweets manufacturing unit here on Friday. The Fire Department received a call in the afternoon following which two fire engines were pressed into service. The flames were doused within an hour, officials said adding no casualties were reported. The cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained. Prima facie, it appears that the fire broke out due to an electrical short-circuit in the unit. TNS
Purse snatched from woman
Zirakpur: An Activa-borne youth reportedly snatched a purse from a woman in broad daylight here. The victim, a resident of Zirakpur, was going with her daughter when the miscreant snatched her purse. The victim reported that her purse contained cash, Canadian dollars and other important documents. The police scrutinised the footage of CCTV cameras installed in the area to identify the suspects. 960 examined at dental camp
Chandigarh: As many as 960 students from Class I to X were examined at a dental check-up camp organised at Saupins School, Sector 32, here on Friday. The students were checked by a team of doctors from Dental Wellness Centre in association with Sri Sukhmani Dental College and Hospital, Dera Bassi. The centre is led by dental surgeons Dr Sachin Passi, principal, Sri Sukhmani Dental College, and Dr Nandini Passi, vice-principal, Sri Sukhmani Dental College. Each student was given a patient card, report of the diagnosed problem and recommended treatment plan. TNS
