Chandigarh: An Activa rider allegedly thrashed an 18-year-old youth, a student of BA first year, and robbed him of his mobile phone on February 21. Victim Jai Kishan, a resident of Ram Darbar, Phase II, reported that the miscreant, who was riding a black Activa, thrashed him and robbed him of his mobile phone near the railway bridge at Ram Darbar, Phase I. The victim, who was on a bicycle, got injured and was admitted to the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32. The police have registered a case under Section 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery) of the IPC at the Sector 31 police station. TNS

Draw of lots for Maloya flats

Chandigarh: The Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) will hold a draw for allotment of small flats at Maloya on February 25. The draw will be held at Kisan Bhawan in Sector 35 at noon. Eligible beneficiaries, who have registered themselves with the CHB, shall attend the draw. The Estate Office, UT, provided a list of 2,835 eligible beneficiaries under the Chandigarh Small Flat Scheme-2006. TNS

Prof Sirohi to contest LS poll

Chandigarh: Prof Devi Sirohi, a former chairperson of the CCPCR, has announced to contest the Chandigarh Lok Sabha seat as an Independent candidate. She has done PhD from Panjab University and has been teaching history in various institutions for the past several years. Speaking about her vision for the city, she said being from education sector, her priority would be to provide quality education through technology. She would also focus on educating the girl child. MP inaugurates solar plant

Chandigarh: MP Kirron Kher on Friday inaugurated a 10 kWp solar photovoltaic power plant installed on the rooftop of Gandhi Smarak Bhawan in Sector 16 here.  The plant, which has capacity of generating 13,000 units of power in a year, was installed at the cost of Rs 4.66 lakh under the MPLAD Scheme and is being executed by the Chandigarh Renewable Science and Technology Promotion Society (CREST).  Debendra Dalai, CEO, CREST, UT, area councillor Ravi Kant Sharma, KK Sharda, chairman, Gandhi Samark Trust, Ravinder Singh, project director, CREST, and other officials were present on the occasion. Seminar on mathematics

Chandigarh: The Department of Physics, Panjab University, hosted a seminar on ‘Bhaskaracharya’s Mathematics and Astronomy and the aftermath’ by Professor MS Sriram, former faculty at the University of Madras, Chennai, who is the president of Professor KV Sarma Research Foundation. 

PU signs MoU with USERN

Chandigarh: An MoU was signed for the first time during a GIAN programme between Panjab University and Universal Scientific Education and Research Network (USERN) on Friday, during the valedictory function of the five-day workshop on ‘Primary Immunodeficiency diseases from bench to bedside’ at the Department of SAIF/CIL, Panjab University. Professor Karamjeet Singh, PU Registrar, the chief guest for the valedictory function, congratulated the organisers for inviting Professor Nima Rezeai from Tehran, who is among top scientists of the world. A booklet, containing all lectures by Professor Nima Rezeai, was released.

6 challaned under COTPA

Kharar: A team of the Health Department paid a surprise visit to 21 shops here on Saturday in order to check the implementation of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act. SMO of the Kharar Civil Hospital Dr Surinder Singh said 6 traders were challaned for violating the provisions of the Act. OC

No tenant info, Man booked

Kharar: The police have registered a case under Section 188 of the IPC against Davinder Verma, owner of flats of Amayra Greens-2, for not providing information about his tenants to the police. ASI Jaswant Singh received information that some boys were living on rent in flat numbers 104, 103, 203 and 204 in Amayra Greens-2, Daun Majra, and the landlord of these flats had not informed the police about them.  OC
