Injured labourer dies at PGI

Kharar: A migrant labourer, Guddu, who was seriously injured after the wall of an under-construction building collapsed near Bansan Wali Chungi here on Wednesday died at the PGI on Thursday. Three migrant labourers, including Guddu, had sustained serious injuries after the wall collapsed all of a sudden. They were taken to the Civil Hospital, Kharar, from where Guddu was shifted to the PGI. The police have initiated proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC on a statement of Jakhu, father of the deceased. Jakhu told the police that he, along with his son and two other labourers, was working in the house of  Gurjinder Singh. Around 12.30 pm, the wall of the house gave way. OC 

Thieves flee with car wheels

Chandigarh: Three wheels of a car were stolen from Sector 63. According to the police, the complainant, Raghubir Singh, reported that some unknown person stole the wheels of his car while it was parked near his house on the intervening night of February 12 and 13. A case has been registered at the Sector 49 police station. TNS 

Mobile phones stolen

Chandigarh: Two mobile phones were stolen from a house at Hallo Majra. According to the police, the complainant, Angad Kumar, reported that someone stole the cell phones from his house on the intervening night of February 11 and 12. A case has been registered at the Sector 31 police station. TNS

Tennis meet from March 11  

Chandigarh:  The Indian leg of the Masters of Road to Wimbledon will be held at the Chandigarh Club here from March 11-16. India's top 16 players in the U-14 age-group will be participating in the event, said the organisers. The top two players from the tournament will have the privilege of playing on the world famous Wimbledon courts, and at several other venues in the United Kingdom, later during the year. TNS

Manisha, Shubham win gold medals

Chandigarh: Manisha raced to 200m gold during the 64th annual athletic meet of Government College of Education, Sector 20, here, on Thursday. Ruby won the silver, while Pooja returned home with the bronze medal. Shubham topped the podium in the boys' 200m competition. Apoorav and Chandramohan shared the second place, while Avdesh Niranjan bagged the third position. Shubham also dominated the field in the 1500m and 800m. Meanwhile, Manisha Kumari, Pooja and Roshni occupied won the top-three positions, respectively, in the girls' 400m race. Amrinder Kaur won the gold medal in shot put, while Samriti topped the list in long jump. TNS

Medical camp held in jail

Patiala: The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), in association with the Rotary Club and the Health Department, held a medical camp at the Central Jail here on Thursday. District and Sessions Judge Rajinder Aggarwal inaugurated the camp. DLSA Secretary Ashish Bansal was present on the occasion. As many as 435 inmates were examined for eye, skin, nose and throat ailments. About 50 of them were also given spectacles. TNS

MoU signed with UK varsity

Patiala: Punjabi University signed a general memorandum of understanding with the University of Wolverhampton, West Midlands, UK, on Thursday. The university authorities said it would help both universities to explore possibilities of mutually beneficial exchange programmes. Prof BS Ghuman, Vice Chancellor, signed the MoU on behalf of Punjabi University with Dr Geoff Layer of the UK university. Prof Ghuman presented a brief account of Punjabi University’s activities and achievements. He highlighted various MoUs signed with Indian and foreign universities and other reputed organisations.
