Dera Bassi: A man died after he was allegedly hit by a car near the flyover here on Friday evening. The deceased has been identified as Sarvesh Kumar Dwivedi, a resident of Dera Bassi who worked at a factory in the town. The police said the victim got down from a bus and started walking towards his home when he was bit by a car. He was taken to the Civil Hospital where doctors declared him brought dead, added the police. A case has been registered against an unidentified car driver at the Dera Bassi police station. OC

DIHAR to be PU research centre

Chandigarh:  In the upcoming Syndicate meeting of the PU, the Defence Institute of High Altitude Research (DIHAR), which has its base camp in the city, is likely to be approved as a research centre for microbiology and botany. Earlier, the syndicate meeting was to be held on January 27, but it was postponed due to the demise of senator Rahgubir Dyal Bansal. The meeting now scheduled to take place on February 18. TNS

FIVE-DAY FTII course a hit  

Chandigarh:  The five-day film appreciation course, mentored by filmmakers Pankaj Saxena and Munish Bhardwaj, under the joint aegis of FTII, Pune, and the PU, is being attended by cinema buffs from across the region. The course includes technical sessions outlining the evolution of camera, development of cinematograph in Europe and in India and early techniques in cinema through examples drawn from cult films.TNS

CHANDIGARH: The Department of Zoology, PU, is buzzing with the preparations of alumni meet to revive the good old times. The event will be held on Sunday. Students of old batches will make their way back to the department. TNS

‘Chura post’ recovered

Ambala: The police have seized 2.20 quintals of ‘chura post’ from a room near a farm in Manglai village here on Saturday. The suspects, who used to supply ‘chura post’, have been identified as Vijay Pal of Khuda Kalan village, Mahinder of Samlehri village and an unidentified person. The CIA-2 of the Ambala police got a tip-off that a huge quantity of ‘chura post’ has been stored in a room. During the raid, 12 plastic bags containing ‘chura post’ were recovered. Vijay, who is the brother of the sarpanch of the village, has been detained. TNS

CSD employees defer strike

Chandigarh: Members of the Unit Run Canteen Employees Welfare Association have decided to defer their strike following a meeting with Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in connection with their demands. Their demands include revision of salary, regularisation of temporary and contractual employees, stopping terminations and implementation of the recommendations of the Comptroller and Auditor General reports to streamline the functioning of canteens. The association’s office-bearers placed their demands before the Defence Minister on February 7 and in view of her assurances that the demands would be examined, the association has decided to wait for 10 days for official response before deciding upon the next course of action. Stir: 15 trains to remain cancelled

Ambala: As many as 15 trains will remain cancelled due to Gujjar agitation in Rajasthan. According to information, Mumbai-Firozpur Express (19023), Bandra-Amritsar Express (12925), Bandra-Katra Express (12471) and Bandra-Dehradun Express (19019) will remain cancelled on February 10. Mumbai-Firozpur Express (19023), Mumbai- Amritsar Express (12903), Bandra-Dehradun Express (19019) and Indore-Jammu Express (22941) will remain cancelled on February 11. Mumbai-Firozpur Express (19023), Bandra-Dehradun Express (19019) and Bandra-Amritsar Express (12925) will remain cancelled on February 12, while Mumbai-Amritsar Express (12903), Mumbai-Firozpur Express (19023), Hapa-Katra Express (12475) and Bandra-Dehradun Express (19019) will be cancelled on February 13. Free health camps

Patiala: The District Health Department organised four free health camps here on Saturday. The camps were held to make people aware of common health problems. People were informed about the health services being offered by the state government. Civil Surgeon Dr Manjit Singh monitored all activities. He said as many as 1,265 patients were given free diagnostic services and medicines at the camps held at Vikas Nagar, Gobind Nagar, Hoti Mardaan Gurdwara and Bharat Colony. — TNS

Symposium on Guru Nanak Dev

Patiala: The World Punjabi Centre, a constituent establishment of Punjabi University, Patiala, organised a high-level symposium to discuss the contemporaneous values of Guru Nanak Dev in commemoration of his 550th birth anniversary here on Saturday. All speakers highlighted the role of education in transforming society at large. Vice-Chancellor Prof BS Ghuman said the globalisation of Guru Nanak’s message through various means could only bring about desired changes in society. Dr Amarjit Grewal, a speaker, proposed to introduce basic structural changes in the education system to uproot the disorderly elements affecting the society. — TNS
