Chandigarh: The PGI, Chandigarh, claimed to have become the first Union Government institute by conducting its first ‘in-house’ live donor liver transplant (LDLT) independently in northern India on Friday. The PGI had started its deceased donor liver transplant (DDLT) programme in 2011.  The surgical team of the institute had waited to complete over five dozen DDLTs to start the LDLT.  This long wait was to gain enough experience for a transplant programme and get its support system. The period between 2011 to date was utilised to enhance the DDLT programme. As of now, the PGI is the country’s largest DDLT centre, added the PGI. Prof Jagat Ram, Director, PGI, congratulated the doctors for their efforts. TNS
