Hunt on for 15 for robbing, blackmailing people

Six members of a Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar family and their nine others have been booked for allegedly blackmailing two residents of Lakhna village. Among those booked are three women.

The incident occurred three weeks ago and the case was registered on Thursday. According to information, it is the ninth such case registered against the family, who are said to have blackmailed a number of people for years.

ASI Sarabjit Singh, investigating officer, said the accused had been identified as Veera Sharma, her husband Darsharn Parkash, two sons Lalit Kumar, Munish Kumar and their wives Simran and Kiran, respectively, Paramjit Kaur Sandeep of the same locality and eight others.

The ASI said Veera Sharma made phone calls to one Partap Singh and his cousin Manpreet Singh of Lakhna village and invited them to their house. After Veera served them tea, the other accused, armed with lathis (canes), datars (daggers), kirpans (swords) and baseball bats. Accusing the victims of molesting the woman, they thrashed them, the police said.

The accused are said to have made Partap Singh naked and tied Manpreet Singh with ropes and taken Rs 9,000, gold rings, chains and other valuables. The police said that the accused videographed the entire episode and threatened them of uploading it on social networking sites. They demanded a ransom of Rs 50,000 to release them. Partap Singh, somehow, managed to give them Rs 20,000 by sending messages to his family members.

Later, the victims lodged a police complaint. ASI Sarabjit Singh said that the matter was investigated for three weeks following which a case was registered. According to him, the accused did the same thing to an Army personnel around five months ago, who too had lodged a police complaint against them. The accused were out on bail in that case.

The ASI said that it was ninth such case registered against them. All of them are absconding since the registration of the case under Sections 379-B (2), 342, 347 and 506 of the IPC.
