The violation of traffic rules is rampant on city roads. It is shocking to read about dragging a police constable by a traffic violator in Sector 44. Incidents of goons attacking cops during challaning have become a common scene. Traffic policemen need to keep weapons to retaliate and neutralise such acts. Several incidents of auto lifters crashing through police barricades in a bid to escape with stolen vehicles have also been reported in the past. Criminals fire at police parties at night and manage to get away as there is no retaliation. The police must give special weapons training to selected traffic cops. Cops carrying weapons will also have a psychological effect on traffic offenders. Sanjay Chopra, Mohali

Disposal of impounded vehicles by police

Most of the vehicles impounded by the police are in running condition at the time of seizure, but one finds them reduced to junk in various police stations. This is a national waste. The government must amend the relevant legislation appropriately so that these can be released to their owners against monetary warranties or disposed by auction after maximum 90 days from date of impounding. Mayor vs councillors

As per daily news items, infighting between the newly elected Mayor and councillors on one or the other issue is taking place inside and outside the House leading to indiscipline in the party. It appears that despite opposition within and outside the party, it was a compulsion for the BJP to field and get Rajesh Kalia elected as Mayor of the MCC because issues such as segregation of garbage, proper functioning of garbage processing plant at Dadu Majra and street vendors rehabilitation could not be tackled by the earlier Mayors and commissioners as Kalia as a councillor remained in the forefront to support agitation of these sections of society, thus posing hindrance in the implementation of Acts relating to these issues. Time will tell how he solves the same during his tenure of one year.  AS Ahuja, Chandigarh

Official apathy

This photograph taken near NAC, Mani Majra (on NH-22), at the entry point of Panchkula, not only displays a hidden ‘No entry’ board, but also captures an open-ended garbage dump here. Needless to say, the very purpose of putting up this warning board gets defeated as it is almost invisible to the fast-moving vehicular traffic. Further, this man-made garbage dump also goes on to add to much avoidable ecological problems. But, how come that all this has failed to attract the attention of the authorities concerned? Perhaps, the officials concerned could be conveniently looking the other way. Kumar Gupt, Panchkula

Is a civic issue bothering you? Are you agitated over the lack of concern? Is there something heartening that you feel needs to be highlighted? Or a picture which in your opinion ought to be seen by many, and not just you?
