Apropos the news report ‘Three women arrested for snatching bid on 70-yr-old’ published in the pages of Chandigarh Tribune, October 19, is a shocking incident. It also reveals the modus-operandi followed by the three woman accused to snatch the gold chain from Sumitra Devi, a resident of Mani Majra, who boarded an auto-rickshaw in Sector 45. The woman raised an alarm, following which the PCR staff patrolling in the area came to her rescue. However, it may also be pointed out that incidents involving crime against women is usually taken due note of by various NGO’s, women helpline, government agencies among others. But, we need to act with same zeal when crime is committed by women, which are already on the rise. Kumar Gupt, Panchkula

Zika virus advisory

To check Zika virus, the UT Health Department has issued travel and health advisory for the same. It has advised the city residents not to allow water to stagnate to prevent mosquito breeding. But, nothing is done to prevent stagnation of water on roads, parks and potholes. These are also the breeding places not only for Zika virus, but also for dengue, malaria etc. These places are commonly found in the southern sectors of the city i.e. from Sector 39 to Sector 47. But nobody takes pain to cover these potholes. The UT Administration must take steps to avoid accumulation of water on roads etc to prevent breeding of mosquitoes.

Ignoring flight safety

Illegal structures which has mushroomed around the Chandigarh International Airport poses a serious threat to flights operating from the airport, endangering the safety of passengers. The Air Force authorities have frequently taken up the issue with the civil administration without any positive results. Considering the gravity of the situation, the Punjab and Haryana High Court directed GMADA, Mohali, Municipal Corporation and UT Administration to demolish illegal structure within 100 metres of the boundary wall as per the rules. Some illegal structures have been razed by the administration, but due to political interference, the drive which put on hold. It is important to take action against illegal structures and avoid any untoward incident.

Strike by roadways employees unfair

It is unfair and unwarranted on the part of the employees of the Haryana Roadways to go on strike, which entered its 3rd consecutive day on Thursday as it is causing a lot of inconvenience to the commuters travelling within the tri-city and also out of Chandigarh and Panchkula. The worst affected are the students, patients and office goers, who prefer public transport to travel within the tri-city because of cheaper rates and plying frequency in comparison to private transport available. Auto-rickshaws and cabs are charging exorbitantly due to increasing demand. The Haryana government and the authorities concerned must intervene and resolve the issue urgently so that the bus services are resumed immediately. If they still insist on continuing strike, the government must take legal action against the employees.

Plight of those trapped at  de-addiction centres

Illegal drug de-addiction centres have made the life of their inmates miserable. Numerous news stories suggest horrific plight of the inmates. The government made huge poll promises, but turned a blind eye to the drug abuse. The police rescued around 250 inmates from an illegal de-addiction centre at Jand Sahib village. The inmates told the police about the terror inflicted on them on the pretext of treatment. They were tied with iron chains to window grills, beaten and were left without food for numerous days. This is the truth of the drug de-addiction centres in Punjab. It is the violation of human rights as these drug abuse victims also deserve humane treatment. Jaspreet Singh, Patiala

Is a civic issue bothering you? Are you agitated over the lack of concern? Is there something heartening that you feel needs to be highlighted? Or a picture which in your opinion ought to be seen by many, and not just you?
