Guv, Meghalaya CJ discuss ways to make legal system more effective

Mohammad Yaqoob Mir, Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court, met Governor Satya Pal Malik at Raj Bhawan here on Friday.

The Governor and the Chief Justice exchanged views on various important issues relating to making legal system more effective for meeting the aspirations of the people at large and their felt needs and demands.

Chief Vigilance Commissioner PL Gupta also met the Governor and briefed him on various important issues relating to the functioning of the commission and the Anti-Corruption Bureau.

The Governor emphasised the importance of ensuring transparency in the functioning of the public institutions and the role of Vigilance Commission and Anti-Corruption Bureau in checking the corrupt elements and dealing with them effectively.

Meanwhile, Prof Sanjeev Jain, Vice Chancellor, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra, briefed the Governor about the progress achieved in the past months in the academic, administrative and infrastructural development arenas and the initiatives underway at present.

The Governor, also the Chancellor of the university, emphasised the importance of ensuring that there was no gap whatsoever in the quality of teaching and stressed maintaining sharp focus on the implementation of relevant research projects.

A delegation of the Kashmir Fruit Growers and Dealers’ Association from Sopore led by its president FA Malik also met the Governor.

Their demands included that the Kisan Credit Card loans of farmers be waived on account of damage to the horticulture crops due to unexpected hailstorm, unhindered movement of fresh fruits outside the state be allowed, sanctioning of adequate funds for development of fruit mandi at Sopore, installation of high-mast lights at Sopore fruit mandi and en route from Sopore bypass to the mandi, availability of quality pesticides and tree spray oils at genuine rates, construction of a flyover from Chakrodaykhan up to Hakim Sonaullah Hospital and fruit mandi, nod to a railway track from Baramulla to Kupwara be routed from Amargarh Sopore station in the vicinity of fruit mandi, construction of a truck terminal at Tulball, Sopore and revival of juice plant at Doabgah. The Governor assured due consideration of their demands.

Meanwhile, a delegation of the BJP Minority Morcha led by Haji Tariq Hussain Keen, member of the state executive body of the BJP, met Governor Satya Pal Malik.

The delegation submitted a memorandum to the Governor with the request for initiating various development projects for enhancing road connectivity, provision of quality healthcare, education and various other facilities in the Inderwal constituency. Malik assured them appropriate consideration of their demands.

Presented book on water harvesting techniques

Ashutosh Kumar Singh Rana, Chief General Manager, State Bank of India (SBI), Chandigarh circle, briefed the Governor about the bank’s functioning in J&K, its future expansion plans and about the services being offered to the SBI clients. He presented a copy of book titled “Flow-India through Water” conceived by Sunjoy Monga and supported by the SBI, which highlights how harvesting and storing water in indigenously designed structures like stepwells, ponds and embankments were a way of life in India. The Governor lauded the SBI for providing reliable banking services to its customers and stressed the crucial role that must be played by the entire banking sector to promote all-round growth and development in the country.
