Squarely blaming the callousness and apathy on the part the Punjab Government and the Sangrur district authorities for shocking death of Fatehveer, who had remained trapped in a bore well for five days, the Youth Akali Dal (YAD) held a protest near railway station. The representatives of several social organisations and schoolchildren, carrying placards, condemned the government for inapt handling of the rescue operations.

Led by district president Gurdeep Singh Gosha, the protesters alleged that Chief Minister Amarinder Singh had not taken the plight of the trapped child seriously and rather than handing over the rescue operations to the Army, the untrained NDRF personnel were permitted to carry out a search for the child. “The hit-and-trial methods adopted by the NDRF team, the police and the district administration led to the failure of the rescue operations,” they maintained.

Gosha alleged that the apathetic attitude of the government towards Fatehveer was just because he belonged to the family of a common man. “Had he been the child of some VIP or high dignitary, the administration would have handled the operation in an entirely different manner,” he said.

Social activist Parveen Dang said today, Fatehveer’s death had shamed the entire people of Punjab and this mishap had proved beyond any doubt that the government and the administration were incompetent and unable to save precious human lives due to a lack of machinery and technical knowledge.
