Jammu, February 12

Governor Satya Pal Malik has constituted a committee of senior officials in deference to the sentiments of the people of Kargil, who have been demanding a rotational divisional headquarters (HQ) in Leh and Kargil.

The announcement was made after several protests rocked Kargil and Jammu ever since the state granted a divisional status to the Ladakh region that consists of Leh and Kargil districts, on February 8.

The state had also announced that Leh would be the permanent headquarters of the newly created division, which caused a lot of resentment among the people of Kargil, who termed it discriminatory and held demonstrations to stress for a rotational divisional headquarters in Kargil and Leh.

Taking notice of the sentiments of the people of Kargil, the Governor formed a panel under the chairmanship of Principal Secretary, Planning and Development, Rohit Kansal. It will submit its report in a short time.

The panel will study the issue and hold talks with all stakeholders in the region to come up measures which will meet the expectations of both districts in the region.

The PDP, which is calling for creation of more divisions, described this as a delaying tactic by the administration.
