Ludhiana, January 9

As the final examinations are approaching and the teachers are busy completing the syllabus in schools, and a major festival of Punjab, Lohri, is coinciding with the teachers’ games schedule, the three-day sports event scheduled for January 11 stands cancelled till further orders.

These instructions were issued by the Director, Education Department, to all DEOs in Punjab today from Chandigarh.

With the games having been cancelled, teachers and principals have heaved a sigh of relief. “Thank God! The event has been cancelled. We are heaving a sigh of relief. Otherwise, we could not even celebrate the festival with our families. The DEO had made it clear that no excuse would be entertained and all teachers will have to perform duties diligently,” said one of the teachers who attended today’s meeting.

Meanwhile, the local organisers were finding it difficult to arrange for proper washrooms for teachers who were to be put up at government schools during the games. “There are toilets but there are hardly any washrooms for bathing in most schools. We had to appeal to participating teachers to cooperate with us, as it was not possible to construct a separate bathing area for them. Also there was no arrangement for hot water. How could we expect teachers to bathe in cold water in this extreme cold weather? All these issues came to the minds of those attending the meeting, but all were tight-lipped,” said a Principal who attended the meeting.

The teachers were not too happy as the games were coinciding with Lohri. “I had to attend the first Lohri of my relative’s son in Bathinda on January 12. Now, I can attend the function. The senior officials must have realised these problems which forced them to cancel the games,” said a teacher at a government school.

It was expected that more than 6,000 teachers would take part in these games to be simultaneously held at separate venues.
