The Health Department has released ‘Gambusia fish’ in 13 ponds of various villages, falling under the jurisdiction of Mehatpur Primary Health Centre here today.

A spokesperson of the department said: “The Gambusia fish’ which is also called mosquitofish, eats the mosquito larvae and help in controlling the diseases like malaria and dengue.”

“The fish has been released in the ponds of Kotla Janga, Gohira, Boparai, Tahli, Shankar and Dhaliwal villages. The fish was brought from the hatchery of the district which has been developed at the Kartarpur Civil Hospital,” he added.

“The growth of mosquitoes can be tackled by introducing Gambusia fish in ponds, which primarily feed on mosquito larvae,” he added.

He said: “The department has also installed boards outside the ponds to inform the people about the releasing of Gambusia fish in the ponds, adding that the villagers have been asked to not to put ‘black oil’ in the ponds which can harm the fish.”
