Virsa Vihar has created a small gallery, displaying the history of traditional musical instruments that are used in most of folk musical forms. Promoting these instruments as a part of revival project for documenting folk traditions of Punjab, the gallery displays several key instruments that are significant to the folk music history of the state.

“We have algoze that has a unique sound typical to Punjabi folk dance forms. We have dhadd sarangi, nagada, etc. We have bought them to promote among young folk artistes and listeners,” says Kewal Dhaliwal, who is making efforts to digitise folk music forms or artistes by recording live performances using these instruments. Virsa Vihar also offers teaching lessons for anyone who wants to learn. — TNS
