A public forum on liver cancer and acute stroke will be organised at the lecture theatre, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGI), here on Saturday.

Renowned hepatologists, radiologists, neurologists and surgeons will discuss the prevention and cure of these diseases. The event, which will be open to public, is being organised by the Indian Society of Vascular and Interventional Radiology and the Department of Radiodiagnosis, PGI.

On February 3, the society will organise its annual conference. Prof Ajay Duseja, Department of Hepatology, PGI, who will be moderating the session on liver cancer, said the forum would highlight the role of interventional radiology in the management of the liver cancer.

In liver cancer patients, said Prof Duseja, tumors could be treated by placing fine needles or probes into the lesion under image-guidance and then destroying it by passing heat, high-voltage current or by cyclical freezing and thawing.

“These cancers can also be treated by passing a catheter from the groin into the blood vessel supplying the tumor and then delivering either chemotherapy or radiotherapy,” he said.
