Srinagar, December 10

For over three months, Fareeda Begum hoped that his 15-year-old son will return home, but on Sunday evening, he arrived in a coffin.

Lashkar-e-Toiba militant Mudassir Parrey was killed in a gunfight at Mujgund in Srinagar along with two other militants.

The Parrey family, which lives in a tin shed house at Hajin in Bandipore district, is shattered.

“He left home on August 31 to watch a match at a local playground and never returned,” said Mudassir’s father Abdul Rashid, a part-time labourer. “We kept looking for him for months, but to no avail. We came to know he had joined militancy when his photo surfaced on social media last week.”

His picture with an AK-47 rifle in one hand and a knife in the other recently surfaced on social media. “The picture shocked us all,” a local resident of Hajin said.

After Mudassir went missing, the police had inputs that he had joined militant ranks along with another teenage militant Saqib Sheikh, who was killed in the same gunfight. After the picture surfaced on social media, his family made several appeals for his return.

His mother said she was waiting for him all these days.

“I am happy he achieved martyrdom,” she said.

There was an outrage on social media over the killing of the teenage militant, with people questioning both militants for recruiting the boy and the government for killing him.

A large number of people attended the funeral prayers of the teenage militants at Hajin. Intense clashes also broke out in the area after the funeral.

At least seven houses were damaged during the encounter at Mujgund. While the residents blamed forces for using excessive ammunition which damaged their houses, the Army blamed militants for putting the houses on fire to break the cordon.

Another slain militant Saqib Sheikh, according to locals, had done a cameo in a Bollywood film.
