Hyderabad, January 31
Five construction workers died after they fell from the ninth floor of an under-construction building that was part of a government housing project on the outskirts of the city.
Another person is reported to be critical, police said.
The incident took place in Keesara block’s Rampalli village of Medchal district on the outskirts of Hyderabad. The incident took place when the workers, mainly from West Bengal and Bihar, were involved in shuttering work.
The project is part of the government’s much touted 2 BHK scheme which formed part of the election manifesto and will provide housing for the poor.
The work is being done through private contractors and building companies across the state.
Malkajgiri Deputy Commissioner of Police Umamaheswara Sarma said that a case was being registered against the contractor for negligence.
Giving details, the DCP said the workers were carrying concrete using a rope for support, when someone lost control and fell bringing the others down.
Hyderabad Mayor B Rammohan has assured the kin of the deceased of all possible financial help.
In another incident, fire broke out in Nampaly exhibition ground in the city completely destroying stalls put up in the exhibition. Many exhibitors from as far as Kashmir have lost all their belongings in the fire. No loss of life was reported.
