A fire broke out in a house in Royal Valley, Dhandra Road, Dugri, late evening on Monday. Valuables worth lakhs were gutted.
An elderly woman, who was alone at home, had a miraculous escape as she was saved by people in the locality after noticing the flames.
Kapil Goyal, who is an executive member of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Jan Kalyan Parchar Cell, said a fire broke out in the house of his parents.
“On Monday, around 7 pm when my mother Sudha Goyal (63), who is suffering from paralysis, was having rest in her room, smoke started billowing from another room. Despite noticing it, my mother could not raise an alarm as she has speech disorder and other problems. It was only when my sister-in-law noticed the smoke, she raised an alarm, following which residents of the locality came and managed to save my mother,” Goyal said.
He said it was the locality people who took LPG cylinders out of the house and averted a big tragedy.
Goyal said in the incident, a Plasma TV worth Rs 1.60 lakh, a laptop, beds, sofa, electrical appliances and other valuables worth lakhs were gutted.
Later, fire brigade reached the spot and managed to douse the flames in an hour.
