The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Thursday dissolved its Delhi unit barely an hour before a local court ordered that an FIR be registered against Manjit Singh GK, the former Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) president who resigned a week ago, for alleged irregularities on a petition filed  by Independent member Gurmeet Singh Shanty.

Manjit Singh GK was president of SAD’s Delhi unit.

Metropolitan Magistrate Vijeta Singh Rawat ordered the Delhi Police to lodge a complaint against the former DSGMC president, former joint secretary  Amarjit Singh Pappu and general manager Harjit Singh Subedar, seeking a compliance report by Friday, Rajinder Chhabra, the defence lawyer, said.

The court also issued a notice to the SHO, North Avenue. “As the SHO has on some pretext or the other chosen not to register an FIR, he shall show cause why an FIR under Section 166-A of the IPC be not ordered to be registered against him, as being a public servant he has knowingly disobeyed the direction of law by not registering an FIR, despite disclosure of cognisable offences, wasting time which should have been directed towards collecting important documents,” the magistrate said.

Shanty has accused the former DSGMC functionaries of having embezzled Rs 51 lakh from the gurdwara funds and submitted a fake bill for 82,000 books on Sikh heritage and uniform for guards.

The SAD, looking for a face-saver, reportedly held a meeting last night and decided to dissolve the party’s Delhi, UP and Rajasthan units on the pretext of “political turmoil in the country following the election results in five states”.
