Chandigarh, July 30

Joint teams of the Estate Office and the Municipal Corporation will remove encroachments from Shastri Market, Sector 22, from tomorrow.

Deputy Commissioner Mandeep Singh Brar today held a meeting to review the plan for the drive.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has ordered to remove encroachments by vendors, hawkers and squatters from walkways, public paths, corridors and open spaces in Shastri Market, Sector 22, within one week.

The court acted on a public interest litigation filed by owners of booths in the market who complained that vendors encroached upon passage in front of their booths, which adversely affected their business. The petitioners told the court they raised the issue before the UT Administration, to no avail. — TNS
