Drinking water crisis on voters’ mind

The Faridabad NIT (New Industrial Township) Assembly segment is one of the youngest constituencies. Carved out in 2009, it has seen only two MLAs so far. Though the Congress and INLD won from here in the last two elections, the seat is likely to emerge as a political hotbed this time as the sitting INLD MLA has unofficially jumped on the BJP bandwagon.

Faridabad NIT residents appear to be divided over its political future. While some believe that the present MLA deserves a repeat, others think that a change is a must.

Like other constituencies, Faridabad NIT too is plagued by problems related to basic amenities. “We had expected the Smart City project to benefit this segment which has 28 villages and several residential colonies under the jurisdiction of the municipal corporation but the constituency is dying to get a sufficient supply of water and power and an efficient sewerage system,” said Sandeep, a local.

“The fate of this predominately urban seat will be decided by several issues,” said Rajiv Kumar Baghel of Sanjay Nagar here. Claiming that drinking water supply was the main issue, he said a large number of people were forced to buy potable water from the “tanker mafia”. The poor drainage resulted in roads getting submerged even with a light shower, he added.

However, Inder Kumar, a shopkeeper of Gonchi village, said the present government deserved a second term as visible changes in governance had not only yielded better results but had also curbed corruption at public places.
