Srinagar, December 29

As a severe cold and freezing weather has enveloped the Kashmir valley, the administration on Saturday issued an advisory urging people not to walk over the frozen parts of the Dal Lake.

The advisory was issued by Srinagar Deputy Commissioner Abid Shah, who warned that walking over the frozen lake was “dangerous and potentially life threatening”.

The parts of the lake were frozen as a rarecold wave has gripped the Valley.

“Due to sub-zero temperature in Srinagar, parts of the Dal Lake freeze these days… it is dangerous and potentially life threatening to walk (or) play on it. It is requested to take note and desist from any such action,” Shah said in the advisory issued on Saturday.

The advisory has been issued as several pictures and videos surfaced on social media sites showing children and youth walking and also playing cricket over the frozen sections of the lake.

The minimum temperature in Srinagar for the past three nights has been seven degrees below the freezing point, which is the lowest December temperature in the last nearly three decades.

The overnight temperature in the city was -7.2°C. Pahalgam recorded -8.3°C, while Gulmarg recorded -7°C. Leh town recorded-17°C.
