Don’t honk on hospital premises

Continuing its campaign to make the city honk-free, the UT traffic police will start challaning motorists found honking unnecessarily inside the hospital premises from tomorrow. 

The police said challans would be issued to motorists inside the PGI campus, the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, and Government Multi-Specialty Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16. 

According to Section 190 (2) of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, any person who drives or causes or allows to be driven in any public place a motor vehicle, which violates the standards prescribed in relation to road safety, control of noise and air-pollution, shall be punishable for the first offence with a fine of Rs 1,000 and for the second or subsequent offences with a fine of Rs 2,000.

Police officials said in the next phase, challans would be issued for honking in other silence zones in the city.

The traffic police had initiated a no-honking campaign in January this year under which motorists were sensitised to the issue and administered a pledge to support the campaign in a bid to make the city noise pollution-free. 

The police had also distributed stickers, meant for steering wheels of vehicles with “I will not honk” written on these.

Cops to issue challans to violators from today
