Solan, January 21

A four-member disciplinary committee headed by former IAS officer AN Vidyarthi will consider about 150 cases of expelled Congress leaders and give recommendations whether these leaders should be taken back into the party fold ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

Constituted by the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chief Kuldeep Rathore, the committee convened its first meeting on Monday where other members, including Sanjay Awasthy, member AICC and two former MLAs, were also present.

Rathore, who convened a meeting of the District Congress Committee here, while addressing mediapersons said since they were at the threshold of the Lok Sabha elections, the first priority was to strengthen the party. He said the newly constituted discipline committee would ponder over all cases and give its recommendations, which would form the basis of taking back these leaders into the party fold, after seeking approval of the high command.

He said these cases comprised those leaders who had either contested against the official nominees in the Vidhan Sabha poll or had indulged in anti-party activities during the elections, which had hit the party prospects. The PCC had expelled these leaders after receiving recommendations from the Block Congress Committee and the District Congress Committee (DCC).

Rathore said his priority was to decentralise power and enforce discipline in the party, which would strengthen its base in the state. He also made it clear that the party activists who were doing a good job, but had failed to get any post, would be given a berth in the organisation, while the inactive functionaries would be shown the door.

Terming the violent incident which occurred in Rajiv Bhawan, during his oath -taking ceremony in Shimla, Rathore said ruckus was created by mere 10 to 20 persons and a two-member independent committee comprising High Court advocates was probing the incident and appropriate action would be taken against those found responsible.

Rathore said he would take stock of the situation by touring all districts and undertake need-based changes in the party organisation as it was not possible to reshuffle the entire organisation as the Lok Sabha elections were round the corner. He said a report about the working of all frontal organisation in the state had also been sought.

Taking the state government to task he said the BJP government had disillusioned the people as it had failed on all fronts with law and order situation going from bad to worse, drug abuse reaching its peak and no development being visible on the ground.

He said an advisory has been issued to those leaders who were using the media to level allegations against one another to desist from such acts or face action as this was weakening the party.

Rathore was extended a rousing welcome by the DCC during his maiden visit to the district after assuming charge as the party chief.
