Police raids being conducted in Bhadroya, Channi-Beli areas of Nurpur and Indora sub-divisions have failed to deter drug trafficking in the bordering villages adjoining Punjab in lower Kangra district. In a special anti-drug peddling drive, the police had nabbed a large number of peddlers and registered 120 cases under the NDPS Act last year.

The detection and registration of cases under the Act seems to have little impact on the inter-state drug mafia. A number of bodies of drug addicts from Pathankot (Punjab) district have been recovered from Bhadroya area, known as synthetic drug den in Nurpur, during the past one year.

Since the area is a safe haven for drug peddlers, Himachal Pradesh police had set up a naka and as a result the drug peddling was stopped to a large extent. But as soon as the naka was lifted, peddlers became active again, selling synthetic drugs, especially chitta (heroin), sedative capsules, injections and charas.

College students are falling prey to peddlers and their parents seem helpless in saving their wards from the menace. It is causing serious concern in the society.

Chitta, a synthetic drug intoxicant, has become favourite among youngsters, especially college goers. The joint raids conducted by Kangra and the neighboring Pathankot district police failed to bring any fruitful results. Locals feel that only sustained police pressure can weaken the drug mafia.

The demand of a SP office in Nurpur has also been gaining momentum. Local MLA Rakesh Pathania has raised this demand repeatedly before Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur during his visit in Nurpur. The CM assured that its possibility in larger public interest would be explored.

Talking to The Tribune, Pathania said drug trafficking in lower Kangra areas had become a serious issue and saving younger generation from falling prey to drug addiction had become a challenge. He said he would again raise the demand of district level police administration at Nurpur as it would serve the whole lower Kangra area comprising Nurpur, Indora, Jawali and Fatehpur sub-divisions.

DSP Nurpur Sahil Arora said the police had maintained pressure. In order to curb drug menace they had conducted regular raids to nab drug peddlers. A number of cases under the Act had been registered in Nurpur and Indora police stations during the past one year. The DSP appealed to the people to support and participate in the anti-drug trafficking campaign launched by the district police in the area.
