DAV pupils win Udai Singh memorial quiz

DAV School, New Shimla, won the 3rd All-India Major Udai Singh Memorial Quiz Competition, which concluded at Army Public School (APS), Dagshai, on Monday.

It is organised in memory of school alumnus Maj Udai Singh who sacrificed his life while fighting militants in Jammu and Kashmir in in 2003. He was awarded the Shaurya Chakara and the Sena Medal for his bravery. He had passed out from the school in 1992. Col KKK Singh, father of the late Maj Udai Singh, was the guest of honour.

The Lawrence School, Sanawar, The Punjab Public School, Nabha (Punjab), St Luke’s School, Solan, St Mary’s Convent School, Kasauli, DAV School, New Shimla, Pinegrove School, Subathu, DAV, New Shimla, DAV Ambhuja School, Dadlaghat, Army Public School, Nahan, Army Public School, Ambala, MM International School, Ambala, and the host APS, Dagshai participated in the quiz.

Quiz master Ravi Sharma tested the teams’ competence on the basis of eight rounds comprising general awareness, straight picture, heritage, sports, audio, video, buzzer and rapid fire. DAV School, New Shimla, APS, Ambala and The Lawrence School, Sanawar, kept the scoreboard moving.

Although there was a tough competition between DAV, New Shimla, and Army Public School, Ambala, the former emerged as the winner. Tarul Sharma of DAV, Darlaghat, was adjudged the best quizzer.

Addressing a gathering on the occasion, Col KKK Singh recalled his long association with the school ever since his son Udai Singh had joined in 1988. He exhorted the students to maintain the high standard of the school so that it could be counted among the best institutions of the country.

Principal Viney Pande said, “General knowledge has become a vast field and it is necessary to specialise in it. You must learn to apply knowledge and here teachers have a great role to play. The best way to improve the general knowledge is to read newspapers, which are the best source of information.”
