The Commissioner of the Police (CP) has sought details of students studying in city colleges and institutes belonging to other states and countries.

According to sources the step has been taken after the incident in Jalandhar wherein three students, who were natives of Jammu and Kashmir, were arrested for their alleged involvement in terror activities. However, the CP said that this was a regular exercise and had nothing to do with the Jalandhar incident.

Colleges and institutes have been asked to provide information of foreign students and those from outside the state, which includes their permanent address, contact details, date of birth, date of admission and duration of the course along with the latest photograph.

Principal, SCD Government College, Dharam Singh Sandhu, said he had received a letter from the CP and already submitted a list of students from other states studying in the college to the Police Department.

“There are nearly nine to 10 students from outside the state and the data regarding them has been submitted by the college to the Police Department,” he added.

Another head of a leading fashion institute said, “We have also submitted details of students studying in our institute, who belong to other states, to the police.”

The Commissioner of Police, Dr Sukchain Singh Gill said, “The department has sought information from colleges and institutes regarding students from other countries and states. It is a regular exercise. The Police Department from time to time keeps on asking for details of students, who are studying here, keeping in view their security.”

Meanwhile, he denied any connection regarding the collection of students’ data with the Jalandhar incident.
