Amritsar, August 20

A police team had a narrow escape when car-borne “alcohol smugglers” fired at a police team when they were signalled to stop on Sunday. The accused, however, managed to escape even though the police team tried to chased them.

Those booked have been identified as Dalbir Singh of Jeevan Pandher village, Rawaljit Singh of Timmowal village and Gopipur of Rampura Jheeta village. Parampal Singh, SSP, Amritsar (Rural), said the police had received a tip-off that the “notorious bootleggers” were bringing alcohol from Rajpura at cheap rates.

He said a police team, headed by Assistant Sub-Inspector Sarwan Singh, installed a checkpoint near the Jandiala Guru toll plaza. He said they signalled to stop a goods carrier, carrying around 50 cans, suspected to be filled with alcohol, and a car (PB-08-6251). Dalbir was driving the car while Rawaljit Singh was sitting next to him. On seeing the police party, Rawaljit fired two gunshots at them.

The cops crouched in no time to save themselves. The accused reversed their vehicles and sped away.— TNS
