Patiala, February 20

The contractual nurses, who have been protesting for the last two weeks, are sticking to nothing less than regularisation letters. They staged a sit-in dharna at the bus stand chowk today.

In fact, protesters blocked the chowk from all sides for three hours, which left the commuters stranded.

Routes of buses plying between Patiala and Bathinda were diverted, due to the protest, which further aggravated problems of travellers.

During the protest, nurses raised slogans against the state government. Following the blockade, the administration rushed to the spot to convince the protesters, but to no avail.

However, taking proactive measures, the traffic police had already blocked all roads leading to the planned route of the protesters.

Before the sit-in, nurses brunt an effigy of Punjab Finance Minister Manpreet Badal.

The protest rally, which contractual nurses and Class IV employees started from Government Rajindra Hospital to bus stand chowk, ended with a sit-in.

In the evening, nurses called off the protest after an assurance of a panel meeting with Punjab Chief Minister, Captain Amarinder Singh, on February 28.

However, Baljeet Kaur Khalsa, a protesting nurse said, “Though we have been assured of a meeting with the CM, we will continue our protest atop the Rajindra Hospital building.”

The protesters also gheraoed former External Affairs Minister Preneet Kaur before she inaugurated the Patiala Heritage Festival at Sheesh Mahal on Tuesday.

The Punjab Nurses, and Ancillary Association president, Karamjit Kaur Aulukh said, “The Finance Department has received the file pertaining to our regularisation, but the authorities are delaying the whole process.”
