New Delhi, September 17

The Congress is staring at a potential crisis in the northeast with Tripura unit president Pradyot Manikya Debbarman, son of the last king of Tripura Kirit Bikram, likely to quit after the party’s opposition to the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state.

Debbarman, 41, in a letter to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, said it had become untenable for him to continue as Tripura Congress chief or even retain party’s primary membership in the wake of Congress’ continued opposition to NRC in the state. An announcement in this regard is likely tomorrow after Debbarman meets Gandhi.

A Tripura Congress leader said, “Debbarman has been feeling humiliated for a while and has conveyed to Sonia Gandhi with a heavy heart that the Congress is its own enemy.” —  TNS
