The Moga police have arrested the son of a Congress sarpanch on the charges of smuggling drugs and recovered at least 1 kg of opium from his possession.

The arrested youth has been identified as Harwinder Singh, younger son of Baljit Singh, sarpanch of Nathoke village in Baghapurana sub-division of the district.

Sources said a team of the CIA staff, Moga, in a joint operation with the Baghapurana police laid a naka outside Baghapurana in the early hours on Monday. On seeing a youth coming on a motorcycle near a canal, they signalled him to stop. On a search, the cops found opium from his possession.

He was arrested and the motorcycle, bearing registration number PB-29-Q-0559, was impounded.

An FIR under Sections 18, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act has been registered against Harwinder Singh at the Baghapurana police station.

Further investigations were in progress, the sources said.
