Jaipur, January 31

The Congress on Thursday touched the 100-mark in a House of 200 in the Rajasthan Assembly as its candidate Shafia Juber Khan defeated BJP’s Sukhwant Singh in the Ramgarh segment that went to the polls on January 28.

She defeated Sukhwant by 12,228 votes. Shafia polled 83,311 votes against Sukhwant’s 71,083.

BSP’s Jagat Singh, two-time former MLA and son of Natwar Singh, lost. Jagat also forfeited his security.

Around 79 per cent of the 2.34 lakh voters had exercised their franchise.

PCC president and Deputy CM Sachin Pilot, who is on a tour of his Tonk constituency, said it was the victory of the Congress government that had worked well, especially for farmers and youth, in the first 50 days of its tenure.

When contacted, BJP state president Madan Lal Saini did not respond, while the party’s spokesman said the result would be reviewed.

The Congress had a tally of 99 out of the 199 MLAs elected in the December 2018 poll; it has the support of alliance partner of RLD Subhash Garg.

The Election Commission had to postpone the poll in Ramgarh following the death of BSP candidate Laxman Choudhary on November 29 last year.

The Congress now has 100 MLAs, BJP 73, BSP 6, RLP 3, CPI-M 2, RLD 1, and others 15.

Meanwhile, CM Ashok Gehlot told the media that the people had given the right message to the rival BJP. The Congress’s mission to win all 25 Lok Sabha seats in the general election would also be achieved, Gehlot said.
