The Congress will soon shortlist candidates to be fielded from Dharamsala and Pachaad Assembly segments as the AICC has decided to appoint two observers to take feedback from workers.

HPCC president Kuldeep Rathore and CLP leader Mukesh Agnihotri met AICC president Sonia Gandhi in Delhi today. It is learnt that Sonia told them that two observers would arrive soon to take feedback which would enable the party to finalise the candidates.

While the BJP has gone into the election mode and Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur has started taking keen interest in the segments, the Congress is nowhere to be seen or heard. Despite the fact that the party faces an uphill task of taking on the ruling BJP, after being virtually wiped out in the parliamentary polls, the party is yet to get its act together.

Sources also said the possibility of the Congress fielding its old candidate Sudhir Sharma from Dharamsala and Gangu Ram Musafir from Pachaad in Sirmaur seemed high. Moreover, there were not too many takers for Congress ticket with the prospects of the party not seeming bright.

“Our party cadre is demoralised as the Congress, despite winning 21 seats in the 2017 polls, has failed to take on the BJP and raise issues against the government,” said a senior leader from Dharamsala.

The two seats fell vacant on the victory of Kishan Kapoor and Suresh Kashyap in the parliamentary polls. With the BJP being in power both at the Centre and in Himachal, winning a bypoll doesn’t seem easy and with the party not being very active, it might be even tougher to take on the ruling BJP.

The BJP, though confident of victory, is plagued with the problem of plenty. With there being a long list of contenders, especially in Dharamsala, finalising the candidate could prove to be a tough call.
