Cong leader’s son, nephew booked for illegal mining

The names of Congress leader and former minister Nirmal Singh’s son and nephew have cropped up in an illegal mining case in Yamunanagar district.

Former minister’s son Uday Vir Singh, alias Sonu, and nephew Sultan Singh were booked under Section 21.4 (1) of the Mines and Mineral Act, 1957, and Section 379 (theft) of the IPC at Khizrabad (Pratap Nagar) police station on February 10.

The complainant, Om Dutt Sharma, Inspector, Mines and Geology Department, Yamunanagar, said complaints were received from Vijay Kumar Sharma, Ravi Sharma, Vikas Sharma, Anuj, Heera Lal Sharma and Madan Sharma, the residents of Devdhar and Kanyawala villages who have agriculture land in Bailgarh village of Yamunanagar district.

He said they alleged that Uday Vir and Sultan were getting illegal mining done on their land. “I along with mining guard Ramesh Kumar and one of the complainants, Ravi Sharma, inspected the site on February 3 and found the evidence of illegal mining,” the mining inspector said.

Nirmal Singh, a senior Congress leader and former MLA from Ambala district, has a stud farm in Bailgarh village.

His son Uday Vir had contested the Assembly election from the Jagadhri constituency unsuccessfully in 2014. He might contest the election from this constituency this year too.

Uday, meanwhile, has termed the allegations of illegal mining baseless and false. “We have not conducted any illegal mining anywhere. The allegations are baseless,” said Uday Vir.

Sources said that 50 FIRs were registered by the mining department, Yamunanagar, against persons found involved in illegal mining activities in Yamunanagar district from January 2018 to December 2018.
