Mohali, December 25

Nikhil Chaudhary scored a strokeful century and forged a 209-run partnership with skipper Anmol Malhotra to help Punjab gain a massive 416-run lead against Uttar Pradesh on the second day of their Col CK Nayudu Trophy match at IS Bindra PCA Stadium here on Tuesday.

Resuming the day on 3/0, the hosts were reeling at 120/6 before Malhotra and Chaudhary steered them to a commanding position. The duo after biting some time in the middle took the attack to the UP bowlers and helped the hosts pile on 354 runs in their second innings.

While the skipper was patient in his approach, Chaudhary was unsparing, hitting the UP bowlers to all the corners of the ground.

After completing his half-century in 85 balls, Chaudhary took just 45 balls to race to the century. He clobbered another 22 runs in 12 balls before falling to Boby Yadav on 123. His 142-ball stay in the middle was studded with 21 boundaries and a six.

Punjab then lost the remaining three wickets for 25 runs to close their innings on 354. Malhotra remained unbeaten on 86.

Earlier, opener Shivam Bhambri failed once again with the bat, succumbing to Wajid Ali on 12. Abhijeet Garg made a golden duck, while Ikjot Singh Thind was dismissed by Yadav on 13.

Ramandeep Singh added just eight runs to the total before becoming the second victim of Yadav. Akul Pandove was trapped in front by Vijay Trivedi on 17.

The only bright spot in the Punjab top order was opener Mansab Gill, who scored a sedate 67 before being dismissed by Shiva Singh.

On the opening day of the match yesterday, Punjab had bowled out Uttar Pradesh for just 106 runs after scoring a below-par 168 in their first innings.
