The Education Department has decided to start English medium section in government schools for class VI in the upcoming academic session 2019-20. The department will start the English medium sections in 310 schools across the state (of which 12 are in Panipat) on pilot basis.

The Education Department had started an English medium section in class IX in academic session 2018-19. Two subjects — maths and science — are being taught in English in the section. It was started in 310 government schools across the state of which 12 government schools are at Panipat. Of these, eight schools are senior secondary schools and four are government high schools.

Now, the department has decided to start a section of English medium from class VI in which all subjects including maths, science, social science will be in English medium. The section would be of 40 students and the department will provide the books for these 40 students in all selected schools. Besides, the department will send the Hindi medium books if the students’ strength crosses the 40 mark.

Dharambir Kadyan, District Elementary Education Officer (DEEO), said, “The department is trying to prepare children from class VI so that they can easily compete with private school students in competitive examinations.”

As English poses a big challenge to students in government schools, the department is focussing on improving their language skills, he added.
